Osasuna defeats Sevilla 1-0 for third straight win
Midfielder Rubén García fires an amazing free kick to lead los rojillos to victory.
Club Atlético Osasuna (10-14-9, 44 points) secured a 1-0 victory over Sevilla FC (9-10-14, 37 points) at El Sadar on Thursday, marking their third consecutive win in La Liga. The evenly matched game was decided by a brilliant free-kick from midfielder Rubén García, who found the top corner in the 25th minute.
Both teams started with a balanced, tactical approach, favoring possession-based play. Osasuna showed more initiative in attack, creating chances through flank crosses and patient buildup. Their efforts paid off midway through the first half, when García broke the deadlock with a perfectly placed free kick.
The momentum shifted further in Osasuna’s favor minutes later when Sevilla’s forward Dodi Lukébakio was shown a red card, leaving the visitors with 10 men. Osasuna capitalized on the numerical advantage, finding more space to control possession and push forward. Just before halftime, Osasuna midfielder Pablo Ibáñez was initially shown a red card, but after a VAR review, the decision was downgraded to a yellow. García nearly doubled the lead in stoppage time with a long-range effort that missed the target.
The second half followed a similar pattern, with both sides sticking to their tactical setups. The first notable chance came from Budimir, whose header from a forward Bryan Zaragoza cross was dealt with by Sevilla’s defense. In the 74th minute, Zaragoza had another attempt with a narrowly missed shot from a distance. Midfielder Aimar tried his luck from outside the box a minute later but couldn’t add to the scoreline.
Sevilla came close to an equalizer in the final minutes when forward Suso headed a corner on target, but goalkeeper Sergio Herrera made a crucial save to preserve the win.
Osasuna’s next game will face Villarreal next, on Saturday, May 3, at Estadio de la Cerámica. Kickoff is set for 4:15 p.m. CET (3:15 p.m. BST/10:15 a.m. ET).
