Osasuna's Copa Del Rey ends after a 2-0 loss at Reale Arena

A 14-minute lapse penalized Osasuna, despite being the better team, until the opposition's first goal.

Club Atlético Osasuna ended its Copa del Rey run after losing 2-0 to Real Sociedad at Reale Arena on Thursday night. In a 14-minute lapse, Los Rojillos went from being the leading team on chances to fighting an uphill battle as they found themselves down two goals and with one less player.

Los Rojillos started strong, creating early chances. Forward Ante Budimir came close to opening the scoring with a left-footed strike off a cross, but his effort went just wide. Five minutes later, midfielder Aimar nearly put the visitors ahead with a long-range shot that grazed the post. Real Sociedad struck first in the 21st minute when forward Ander Barrenetxea fired a shot inside the box. Ten minutes later, midfielder Brais Méndez doubled the lead, finishing past an outstretched goalkeeper Sergio Herrera. Osasuna's task became even more difficult in the 35th minute when defender Alejandro Catena received a straight red card after a VAR review. Just before halftime, Aimar connected with a volley that narrowly missed the top corner.

Despite being down a man, the Navarrese continued to push forward in the second half. In the 68th minute, Budimir got his head on a well-placed cross from forward Bryan Zaragoza, but the opposing goalkeeper made a comfortable save. The visitors looked to create chances through quick passing in the final third, but Real Sociedad’s defense held firm, clearing away crosses and limiting opportunities. Late in the match, midfielder Lucas Torró had a final attempt with a powerful right-footed shot from inside the box, but it sailed off target.

Osasuna will be back to league action on Monday, February 10, when they travel to Palma de Mallorca to face R.C.D. Mallorca at Estadi Mallorca Son Moix. Kickoff is set for 9 p.m. CET (8 p.m. GMT/3 p.m. ET).
