Osasuna beats Athletic Club 3-2 and punches its ticket to the Copa del Rey quarterfinals

A brace by forward Ante Budimir and a goal by midfielder Aimar sent the Rojillos through the next round.

Club Atlético Osasuna clinched its spot in the Copa del Rey quarterfinals after defeating Athletic Club 3-2 at San Mamés on Thursday night. Los Rojillos went into the break with a 2-1 lead thanks to midfielder Aimar and forward Ante Budimir; the Lions tied the match a few minutes into the second half, but Budimir sealed the win by scoring a brace 20 minutes before the end of the game.

Osasuna started the match, causing havoc in the opponent’s goal, but couldn’t find the back of the met. Midway through the first half, Budimir tried with a shot from inside the box that missed the target. Los Rojillos held their ground and kept the opposition on edge, and the half-ended took advantage of set pieces and counterattacks. One of those plays was in the 40th minute when Aimar scored the opener after collecting a low cross from defender Jesús Areso. Shortly after, the referee pointed to the spot after goalkeeper Julen Agirrezabala knocked Budimir down. The Croatian international stepped to the spot and converted to double the lead. In the last play of the half, forward Nico Williams Jr. shortens the distance.

Athletic came out of the locker looking for the equalizer and controlling the ball. It was in the 55th minute when defender Óscar De Marcos scored the 2-2. Los Rojillos continued to show a good defensive effort, and in the 70th minute, Budimir got past the goalkeeper to score the game-winner. Athletic Club tried to take the game into extra time, but the team led by head coach Vicente Moreno stopped and earned their spot in the next round.

Before meeting its quarterfinal opponent, Osasuna will face Rayo Vallecano on Sunday, January 19, at El Sadar in Week 20 of LaLiga EA Sports. Kickoff is set for 6:30 p.m. CET (5:30 p.m. GMT/12:30 p.m. ET).
