Osasuna falls 1-0 on the road against Atlético de Madrid

Rojillos and Colchoneros headed into the half in a stalemate, but the home side took the three points 10 minutes into the second half.

Club Atlético Osasuna (6-7-6, 25 points) fell 1-0 against Atlético de Madrid (13-5-1, 44 points) at Riyadh Air Stadium on Sunday afternoon. Los Rojillos and Colchoneros headed into the break in a stalemate, but 10 minutes into the second half, forward Julián Álvarez scored the game-winner off a set piece.

The game started with Atlético de Madrid leading the charge as forward Antoine Griezmann scored an early goal, but upon VAR review, the goal was overturned due to a handball by the Frenchman. Shortly after, goalkeeper Sergio Herrera stopped a dangerous shot by Álvarez. Halfway through the first half, Los Rojillos began to control the game and put goalkeeper Jan Oblak to the test. In the 24th minute, defender Jorge Herrando tried with a header, but the attempt barely missed the target. In the final minutes of the half, midfielder Pablo Ibáñez tried from almost midfield, but his shot went wide.

In the second half, the visiting side wanted to maintain the momentum by showing a defensive effort. In the 55th minute, Álvarez received a pass from defender Clément Lenglet and placed the ball into the back of the net. Osasuna continued to push forward and almost got the equalizer when Ibáñez connected with a pass by defender Abel Bretones. In the 73rd minute, midfielder Rubén García told the referee about a contact by midfielder Pablo Barrios inside the box, but the referee did not consider it a foul. The team led by head coach Vicente Moreno, did not give up trying to tie the game, but the home backline stood their ground.

Osasuna will return on Thursday, January 16, to face Athletic Club at San Mamés in the Copa del Rey round of 16. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. CET (6:30 p.m. GMT/1:30 p.m. ET).
