Osasuna defeats Tenerife 2-1 and clinches a spot in the Copa del Rey Round of 16

A goal by defender Jorge Herrando and an own goal sent Los Rojillos into the next round.

Club Atlético Osasuna clinched a spot in the Copa del Rey Round of 16 after defeating Tenerife 2-1 at Estadio Heliodoro Rodríguez on Saturday afternoon. Los Rojillos secured their place in the next thanks to an early goal by defender Jorge Herrando and an own-goal right before the 30th-minute mark. Los Chicharreros cut the lead with a shot by defender José León from outside the box as the game headed into halftime.

Osasuna started the match by gaining control of the ball and scoring early. In the seventh minute, midfielder Rubén García found Herrando off a corner, and the homegrown player headed the ball to score his first professional goal. The team led by head coach Vicente Moreno, continued to push forward, with forward Ante Budimir, midfielder Lucas Torró, and defender Abel Bretones having an opportunity each. Yet, it was in another corner kick that the Navarrese side extended the lead. Moments later, midfielders Aimar and Jon Moncayola led a counter-attack, which Budimir finished, but the international striker was ruled offside. In the last play of the half, Tenerife cut the distance with a long-distance shot that bounced off the Rojillo backline and into the back of the net.

In the second half, the home side took a step forward as they sought to even the score, but goalkeeper Aitor Fernández stopped them at every chance. Osasuna answered back with a header by Budimir that goalkeeper Edgar Badía cleared. The Rojillo backline became solid as time passed and contained the home side. In the last stretch of the game, midfielder Iker Muñoz fired from close to the midfielder, but Badía parried the ball away.

Osasuna will meet its next opponent on Wednesday, January 8, during the Copa del Rey draw, which will be celebrated at the RFEF headquarters. Following the draw, Los Rojillos will face Atlético de Madrid on Sunday, January 12, at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano in Week 19 of LaLiga EA Sports. Kickoff is set for 4:15 p.m. CET (3:15 p.m. GMT/10:15 a.m. ET).
